Understanding Medicare Claims
When you visit a doctor or healthcare provider who participates in Medicare, you are entitled to a rebate — a contribution from the government toward the cost of your care. Lodging a Medicare claim is how you access this rebate. In many cases, the process is automatic, but knowing your options ensures you never miss out on money you're owed.
Method 1: On-the-Spot Claiming (Most Common)
The simplest way to receive your Medicare rebate is through on-the-spot claiming at your healthcare provider's practice. Many clinics have Medicare terminals (EFTPOS-style devices) that allow them to process your claim immediately after your appointment.
How it works:
- You pay your bill (or nothing, if bulk billed)
- The practice submits your claim electronically to Medicare
- Your rebate is deposited into your bank account — usually within 1–2 business days
For bulk billing, the provider accepts the Medicare rebate as full payment. You sign a bulk billing assignment form, and the provider claims directly from Medicare. You pay nothing.
Method 2: Using the Medicare App
The Express Plus Medicare mobile app (available for iOS and Android) lets you lodge claims from your smartphone anytime. This is ideal when your provider doesn't offer on-the-spot claiming.
To claim via the app:
- Download the Express Plus Medicare app and sign in with your myGov credentials
- Select "Make a claim" and enter details from your account or receipt
- Upload a photo of your account/receipt if required
- Submit — rebates are typically processed within 7 business days
Method 3: Claiming via myGov Online
You can also submit a Medicare claim through your myGov account linked to Medicare. Log in, navigate to Medicare, and select "Make a claim." You'll need the provider's details and the amount charged. This method is convenient and fully digital.
Method 4: Claiming at a Service Centre
If you prefer in-person assistance, visit a Services Australia service centre. Bring your Medicare card, the account or receipt from your provider, and your bank account details. Staff will process your claim on the spot.
Method 5: Claiming by Post
For those without internet access, you can post a completed Patient's Claim for Medicare Benefit form (MS014) along with your original itemised account or receipt to Medicare. Allow additional time for postage and processing.
What Information Do You Need to Make a Claim?
- Your Medicare card number and reference number
- The date of service
- The provider's name and provider number
- The MBS item number (found on your receipt or account)
- The amount charged by the provider
- Your bank account BSB and account number (for rebate payment)
Claim Timeframes
| Claim Method | Processing Time |
|---|---|
| On-the-spot / bulk billing | 1–2 business days |
| Medicare app or myGov | Up to 7 business days |
| In person at service centre | 1–3 business days |
| By post | Up to 28 days |
Important: Claim Deadline
Medicare claims must be lodged within 2 years of the date of service. After this period, you are generally no longer entitled to the rebate. It's good practice to keep your medical receipts and submit claims promptly.
Tips for a Smooth Medicare Claim
- Always ensure your bank account details are up to date in your myGov/Medicare profile
